And There Was Drum Roll Chapter 1 part 4/4

Brian and the cavalry had set camp into a swamp, halfway to Preacher’s grove. He had got a tent of his own, but most of the other men had to share theirs with someone else.

Brian was in his tent, beside a mattress, putting on iron-ring armor.

He was just about to tie his sword onto his waist when he heard shuffling. Rex stepped into the tent, and saluted.

“Yes Rex, what is it?”

Rex looked nervous, he normally didn’t… it didn’t fit his character. He held his bucket helmet onto his side with one hand.

“Umm, Captain-“

“No need to be formal, Rex. Speak your mind,” Brian interrupted.

He gave Brian an awkward grin. “Well then. Umm, so Brian…”

“Yes?”

“I was just wondering…” he trailed off.

“Come on Rex, you know you can speak to me. What is it?” Brian stopped putting on the armor and seath, and tapped his fingers impatiently onto it. Rex nodded and cleared his throat.

“Brian… Have you truly gone against the crown?”

Heavy silence fell upon the men. The dab of the raindrops against the tent and the normal chattering of the soldiers outside were the only sounds present. The moment stretched and stretched until Brian broke the backbreaking silence.

“Yes.”

Rex grimaced. “Why?”

Brian finished tying my sheath on. “Eberas,” he answered. Rex’s face was covered by a shadow.

“After what happened at Eberas-” Brian murmured. Rex didn’t lift his head.

“I hope you'll understand,” Brian said.

“I do… But still-” he shook his head. “That is in the past,” he tried to look happy, but he couldn’t have tricked a fish.

“Will you follow me?” Brian asked.

Rex lifted his hand in a salute that was all but too familiar by now.

“Forever,” he whispered.

Brian saluted back. “Forever,” he answered. “Ready the men, we leave in the evening.”

Hello again :D I like how you are continuing with this! I agree with the comments made before me as well but I have some more of my own to add ;)

He had got a tent of his own,

I think this sentence might sound better without 'got' in it :)

Brian was in his tent, beside a mattress, putting on iron-ring armor.

I agree with the comments Merlin made on this part, I would just additionally advise changing 'putting' as I think you could use a better word that describes the action a little more. Like 'struggling into' or 'heaving on' or something like that.

Rex looked nervous,

I think it would be more effective here to say how he looks nervous, describing some of the features that let Brian know he feels this way. Maybe he is shifting from one foot to the other or avoiding eye contact or fiddling with his hands? Anything like that would work :)

He held his bucket helmet onto his side with one hand.

I think 'against' might be better here than 'onto'.

The dab of the raindrops against the tent and the normal chattering of the soldiers outside

I'm not sure about 'dab' here to describe the sound of the raindrops, I think you could replace it with a more accurate word. Perhaps 'pitter patter' or 'pattering' or you could always describe more the action of the rain than the sound of it (if that makes sense :P) for instance saying the 'onslaught of rain' or 'the raindrops lashing against the tent' or something like that. I'd maybe leave out 'normal' before 'chattering' here too, although that's just my preference ;)

until Brian broke the backbreaking silence.

I'm not that keen on having both 'broke' and 'backbreaking', I'd replace one. Maybe 'broke' could be 'ended' or 'interrupted' or you could change 'backbreaking' to something like 'suffocating' or 'weighty' :)

Brian finished tying my sheath on.

I think 'my' should be 'his' here.

Rex’s face was covered by a shadow

Do you mean literally or figuratively? As you say later on that he does not look up I got the sense that he had looked down but I didn't know that from this. I think you could perhaps rephrase it a little to better show what you mean. Perhaps something like 'A shadow passed over Rex's face and he fixed his gaze on the floor' to show him looking down as well :)

he tried to look happy

Again like with the nervousness, I think you could describe this a bit more. Perhaps he manages a weak smile or something like that?

Rex lifted his hand in a salute that was all but too familiar by now

I'd maybe leave out 'but' here so the sentence flows a bit easier.

Overall: This part was quite short but I think you have done well in showing the loyalty with Brian and those following him, I hope you carry on :D

I think in general there are some areas that more description could be added to, I liked the little actions you had with each character and thought it worked well in setting the scene but when you are showing their expressions I think a bit more could be added. I pointed out the main two areas where I think this happens (where Rex is nervous and then trying to be happy), I think it would be a lot more effective to show the reader how they appear so :) You could always add a bit on how Rex looks too (as in hair colour and eye colour) so that the reader has a good image of him.

I'd also just think about waiting until you have written a bit more before posting as when it is written in quite short sections it's hard to connect them all together to get the bigger picture in what is going on :) I'm not saying they need to be really long, I'd just advise posting a bit longer parts.

Overall though I am still enjoying this! I'm getting more of a sense of Brian and look forward to reading more :) All my comments are just suggestions, hope I've helped!

"He had got a tent of his own, but most of the other men had to share theirs with someone else."
Maybe mention there that he's a captain, because that would be why.

You have a good story, although there are a few grammatical errors and a lot of the word usage doesn't really sound that... fantasy-ish. Examples.

"Brian was in his own tent, besides a mattress, putting on iron-ring armor."
"Own" isn't necessary." Besides" should be "beside", and "iron-ring armor"? You mean "chainmail armor"? Right?

"Brian stopped putting on the iron armor and tapped his fingers impatiently onto it."
I think that just "armor" would be better, since you've explained what it's made of.

“Brian… Have you truly done against the crown?”
"Done" should be "gone".

Also, Brian and Rex don't really seem like good fantasy names.

It's interesting, but there are some errors that need sorting out.
